Event Guide

You are invited to participate in Dustcovery on many levels. We encourage and support everyone’s freedom to express themselves, have the experience they want, and add to the experience of others. However, we do have a few guidelines to ensure that your freedom does not interfere with others and to help us all keep safe and comfortable. Below you will find information on how to prepare for the event and some conditions on attending.

What To Bring

The PNE has again agreed to have a more relaxed security for our event. You may bring a bag and essential items:

  • An empty water bottle to fill at the two water stations inside the venue.
  • Jacket, umbrella, etc for possible cold and wet weather.
  • Ear plugs to protect your hearing. Greeters will have single-use earplugs if you forget yours.

  • Pets – only licensed service and guide dogs are permitted.

Sound Stages

Two stages with four DJs spinning at the same time will keep the energy and excitement flowing all night!

In the Sound Cave, the Cottage Stage will bring a curated journey of sound—DJs weaving deep grooves and dynamic rhythms, from familiar legends to future favourites awaiting your eardrums. Waves of 4D audio, light carved by lasers, and projection mapping converge to create a living, breathing dreamscape over a grassy lawn dance floor.

Back by popular demand, the Silent Disco in the Art Forest will be taken over by the Silly Hat Society, bringing stellar intergalactic disc jockeys to send us into another galaxy. Come grab a pair of headphones and groove out to your choice of three DJs spinning at a time, including a dedicated vinyl deck. Note that an ID (or other valuable item) must be given as collateral when borrowing headphones.

Art & Theme Camps

As a participant-driven event, the heart of Dustcovery is in the incredible art installations and theme camps brought by our community. No matter how big or small, every project at Dustcovery helps create a vibrant and engaging environment to explore within the event.

Outdoor Space

Head outside for the fire show, fire art, food trucks and covered areas to catch a breath.

Make sure you dress for the weather!

Children & Families

Dustcovery is all-ages until 9pm.

Please note that there is no specific children’s programming or censorship. There are activities like colouring, bead bracelet making, giant jenga, etc that are kid friendly. It is up to you to educate your young person or answer questions about any of the content at the event.

Please respect the end time for anyone under 19 and be ready to leave by 9pm. Our team will gently remind anyone with children when the time is approaching.

Re-entry will be allowed until 10pm to give time for parents and caregivers to return.

Accessibility

GVIAS believes deeply in radical inclusion, and we have taken steps to improve the accessibility of Dustcovery at the PNE Forum.

Entrance – An accessible ramp leads from the doors to the event floor.

Outside Access – The entrance ramp leads to the doors to the outdoor area where the fire show, fire art and food trucks are located.

Washrooms – Signage indicates accessible washrooms in the Art Forest. An accessible porta-potty will be available outside.

If you have any specific questions or requests around accessibility, please email dustcovery@gvias.org.

Code of Conduct

All participants attending What If must adhere to the Greater Vancouver Interactive Arts Society (GVIAS) Participant Code of Conduct.

Respect Yourself
The environment and your experiences at GVIAS events may push you in different ways. Occasionally you may feel uncomfortable, or out of sorts. We trust that only you can fully understand what your comfort levels and personal boundaries are. Please be conscious of your well-being and aware of your own needs. Practice self-care. Remember that we value self-reliance in our community. Please know that you can reach out to others for support if you need it.

Respect One Another
As a participant, please be aware of your behaviour, your choices, and ways that they impact other members of the community. Keep consent and personal autonomy at the forefront of all of your interactions. Refrain from non-consensual, discriminatory, bullying, or harassing behaviours. Check in, with yourself and others.

Respect Our Hosts
There are very few places that allow us to do what we do. It is a privilege to use the spaces we use and we need to take care of them. As guests, please treat our hosts, sites, venues, and neighbouring communities with care and respect; our actions will guide future use of, and relationships with, our event venues, their staff and community members.

See something, Say Something
If something doesn’t seem right, you are empowered to speak up and report the situation to the Production Team. Producers reserve the right to remove participants who contradict the spirit of the Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct has been created by the community and we strive to create a healthy and respectful environment for everyone.
